Family Ranch Vacation Getaways

by Elin Hert

Yellowstone

Are you looking to get away somewhere wild, open, and remote – yet comfortable and fun – with your family? Ranch vacations are a great idea for family travel plans if you want to escape the city and spend time together in the Great Outdoors.

There are well over 100 guest ranches in the West, mostly in Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado, with more in Idaho, British Columbia, Oregon, California, New Mexico, and Arizona. Since we opened our doors , Las Almas Tour & Travel has maintained a Ranch Matching Service to help our travelers sift through the overwhelming options to find that perfect ranch. (And believe us when we say, your perfect ranch is not necessarily the ranch that stole the hearts of your best friends or neighbors.)

Where it Started

In the Rocky Mountains, real-deal cattle and sheep ranches took hold in the mid-1800s, while dude ranches date back to around 1904. Most dude ranch guests hailed from the East Coast, committing an entire summer to herding livestock and riding the range. More often than not, those guests returned the next summer, and the next summer… In the 1920s, with the expansion of the railroad, dude ranches popped up all over the West and a long, cherished tradition began.

What’s to Love?

So much to love! Ranch vacations offer enticing combinations of freedom and structure, independence and togetherness, and opportunity and downtime. Most ranches offer a daily activity menu, and you and your travel partners can decide exactly how you want each day to play out – Family day? Me time? A little of both?

You might… Horseback ride to a high mountain lake, settle on the porch with a good book, hike in the morning and play tennis in the afternoon, get in some guided fly fishing, gather up your brood for a mountain bike meander along the ranch trails, challenge your children to a ping pong tournament after dinner, or sing around the campfire (with s’mores!).

Ranch stays include three healthy, hearty meals each day, featuring regionally sourced ingredients and fresh baked goods. Depending on the ranch, you might dine family-style, restaurant-style, buffet-style, and, at some, enjoy adult-time dinners while the kids are off on their own eating adventures.

A Wide Array of Ranch Experiences – Guest Ranches 101
Dude Ranches are classic, authentic, Western-style ranches with a down-home feel – the most esteemed of which are 1920s originals! They are horse-oriented with fewer structured activity options, but you can usually bank on the opportunity to hike, fish, swim, dance, and enjoy a cookout. Accommodations are often in cozy, refurbished, original log cabins. These ranches may have been run by the same family for generations.

Guest Ranches lie somewhere between a Dude Ranch and Ranch Resort. They typically offer a more robust activity program with a wider array of guided options, such as hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, sailing, fishing, national park visits, and a kids’ program. A wider array of amenities might include a swimming pool, hot tub, and mountain bikes to use. Dining will be a bit more gourmet and accommodations are typically more modern and upscale, while still maintaining a western feel.

Ranch Resorts offer a wide array of guided activities and resort facilities. Some are for adults only. Most have swimming pools, tennis courts, spa services, exercise classes, and yoga. You can count on fine dining, well-appointed accommodations, and luxe amenities. All of that said, you can still enjoy a day on the trail, a book on the cabin porch, and fun and games with your friends or family.

Of note! The above descriptions are typical, but not set in river rock. There are dude ranches with tennis courts and ranch resorts with robust horse programs.

Take Advantage of Las Almas Tour & Travel’s Ranch Matching Service:

Dude, guest, resort, small, large, down-home, upscale, great for kids, adults-only, horse-oriented, has a pool, looks amazing on their website… How the heck do you choose? That’s where you can rely on Las Almas Tour and TRavel’s Ranch Matching Service.

We take stock of your travel group’s interests, ages, and favorite activities. Then we’ll ask you more questions: Do you like the sound of an intimate 35 guests or the energy of 100 guests? Do you want to stay for a week or a month? Would you like to surround yourselves with a saguaro- studded desert landscape or have mountains towering above and a river running through it? Do you dream of dining old-fashioned family style or are you drawn to dining with fine wine and adults only, while your kids enjoy a raucous (fully supervised) kids-only dinner and head off to the game room?
