Franz Mayer Museum

The German-born financier Franz Mayer collected an extensive collection of Mexican silver, ceramics, textiles and furniture in his adopted home. This private collection is now on permanent display in his eponymous museum in the historic center of Mexico City. The beautiful everyday objects also include maps, globes, carpets and books from all over the world. After a free tour, you can have a bite to eat in the hotel's café in a central courtyard, where you can learn about the architectural details of the building. It was once an 18th century monastery and hospital.

Tell me what is this place about

This prestigious museum in the historic center of Mexico City is housed in a former monastery and hospital from the 18th century.

How is the collection?

The German-born financier Franz Mayer collected an extensive collection of Mexican silver, ceramics, textiles and furniture in his adopted home. This private collection is now on permanent display in his museum of the same name. The beautiful, historical everyday objects from all over the world also include maps, globes, carpets, books and more.

And the exhibits?

Non-permanent exhibitions differ greatly in terms of subject and medium. My last visit saw an exhibition of contemporary ceramics as well as an exhibition on Tim Burton, which transformed a large part of the museum into the strange and wonderful world of the American filmmaker.

What did you do with the crowd?

The central location of the museum attracts an eclectic crowd. some passers-by, others looking for new temporary exhibitions. The weekends are busy but never overwhelming.

Who visits this museum?

How were the facilities in the practical tip?

414 Although the museum is essentially organized around a courtyard, it can be difficult to find your way to the various exhibition rooms. But there are always staff to help lost visitors. All exhibition rooms have elevators and ramps that make the museum accessible. The cafeteria also offers its menu in Braille.

Just do it, come with....

Gift shop: mandatory, inspiring - or skip it?

Guided tours are offered on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and last an hour and a half.

Gift shop: mandatory, inspiring - or skip it

The gift shop is relatively small but has a nice selection of books that focus on art and design.

Is the cafe worth visiting or should we just plan on going elsewhere?

The café offers a simple selection of sandwiches, salads and cakes. It's not overpriced and the seating in the museum's central courtyard allows you to see the architectural details of the building.

Any advice for time or attention issues?

In general, I like to see the temporary exhibitions first and when I have extra time I go to the permanent rooms. Habibi World Travel & Tour invites you for coffee and cake.
