In the bay of Isla Mujeres is this picturesque and romantic magical city, surrounded by different shades of blue with spectacular views that connect the land to the sea. A traditional city with pedestrian streets full of color, life and unique Caribbean buildings in Mexico. It was also the home and hiding place of famous pirates . This piece of land is barely 7 kilometers long. It is the 1st place in Mexico to be touched by the sun every morning. To see the royal star rise above its crystal clear and turquoise waters, you must travel to Punta Sur.

However, this is not the only reason to go there. Every year from May to September , the whale shark , the largest fish in the world , arrives in this area . You can even snorkel with it . Locals assure that up to 300 copies can be seen. The dimensions of Isla Mujeres make it possible to travel from one end to the other on foot, by bike or by golf cart. So you will have no problem getting to Punta Norte, where the Garrafón Natural Reef Park is located. It has a zip line that takes you across the ocean, and the chance to snorkel in the coral reef with places not to be missed. It also has a biological center for the protection of the turtles. There are even massive releases from youngsters in September.

If you 're looking for bars and restaurants with a Caribbean flair , the Isla Mujeres promenade is the place for you.
Isla Mujeres is also recognized as a relaxing destination. So let yourself be pampered in one of the spas to return from your journey with a new body, mind and soul .

➢ Underwater Art Museum (MUSA)

The MUSA is the first underwater museum in Mexico and is located in front of Isla Mujeres in the area of the Costa Occidente National Park. It consists of 515 life-size sculptures designed by various artists and made from marine cement, which creates coral reef growth.

The works are distributed in three galleries at different depths : Manchones, Punta Nizuc and Punta Sam . You don't have to be a diver to see them. For example, the work “Bendiciones” (six huge hands resting on a sandy area) is 3.5 meters deep and visible from the surface.

The best way to get to the Underwater Museum of Art is on a snorkeling or diving tour. The transport can with a glass bottom boat or a speedboat done. Las Almas Tour & Travel offer a visit to the second largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Reef, which is almost a thousand kilometers long.
The underwater museum was founded in 2009 by the British Jason de Caires Taylor . In addition to being an artist, he is also an underwater naturalist and photographer. He has created two other underwater museums in the world, the Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote (Spain) and the Garden of Underwater Sculptures of Molinere Bay (on the island of Granada). In the case of MUSA, the purpose of its installation was to restore the reef. It was threatened due to human impact and the destruction of Hurricane Wilma (2005). It also balances out the daily number of visits to the natural reef.

➢ Contoy Island

About 30 kilometers from Isla Mujeres is Contoy Island. Has been considered the most important bird sanctuary in the Mexican Caribbean and a national park since 1998 .

70% of its territory is covered by mangroves . There are also lagoons, white sandy beaches, a beautiful jungle and a reef surrounded by its characteristic turquoise tones. 210 species of birds such as cormorants, herons, swallows and boobies live in this paradise . A VIP host is the brown pelican . Every year the island turns into the most important nesting place on the Atlantic coast.

But the birds are not the only attraction of Contoy Island when it comes to animals. Crocodiles inhabit this nine-kilometer stretch of land and are home to three species of sea turtles at the same time : loggerhead carp , white carp , and hawk beak. Mantas and whale sharks feed near the coast (the season runs from May to September).

Visiting Contoy, also known as the Island of the Birds (Isla de los pájaros), is quite an adventure as only 200 people are allowed per day . To secure your place, you need to check with the Amigos de Isla Contoy organization to see if the authorized service providers can run tours. Within the island, you can hike mystical trails, go to lookouts, and snorkel. Remember that as a nature reserve there is no catering service in the region . It is therefore recommended that you bring bottles of water and snacks that you can only consume on board the excursion boats

➢ Garrafon natural reef park

It is one of the most famous natural parks in the Mexican Caribbean that has the privilege of being on the south side of Isla Mujeres, the first place in Mexico to be touched by the sun's rays every morning. Access to Garrafon Natural Reef Park is a mix of adrenaline and serenity . The day can begin by sliding down the three zip lines overlooking the reef . Then navigate the crystal clear waters by kayak indefinitely . If you prefer, there is snorkeling equipment to immerse yourself in the reef's marine life.

If you are constantly active, you are sure to get hungry. Good for you, the entrance to the park includes a buffet bar and a hammock area to enjoy your lunch. From there, you can continue exploring the sculpture garden or ride a bike .

There is also a huge infinity pool overlooking the ocean and its reef. It has waterfalls that massage your back while you look at the view. If you are traveling with children, there is an exclusive paddling pool area . Finally, relax with a temazcal bath in a small cave with medicinal herbs and hot stones . For this activity, Las Almas Tour and Travel must make a reservation prior to arrival at the park. To enjoy Garrafón Natural Reef Park, we recommend that you wear water shoes for activities and biodegradable sunscreens to avoid damaging the corals.

➢ North Point and South Point

From north to south , the two ends of Isla Mujeres serve as highlights of your trip . The size of the island allows you to get and go from North Poing to South Poing in just one day. So do it at your own pace to enjoy what everyone has to offer.

North Point:

Bring a swimsuit and everything you need for a swim on one of Mexico's widest beaches . Given its location, it's easy to guess that Playa Norte is at the magical end of Isla Mujeres .
The reason it is so crowded is its width: 100 meters away separates you from the sea and a dune covered in vegetation . A curious fact is that this was the first point the Spanish conquerors touched as early as 1517.

South Poing:

We've already pointed this out, but this is the first place in Mexico where the rays of the sun touch each other every morning. There is also an outdoor sculpture park with 23 works by artists from around the world. The place can be explored on foot or by bike. You can admire the work of José Luis Cuevas, Manuel Felguerez, Bruce Beasley and Vicente Rojo who donated some sculptures to the park . The walk ends in front of the temple of Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of love, the moon and fertility . From the monument you can admire the cliffs and the reef.
