METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL -

Here in Mexico, I can really say and claim that a capital stands on a long-gone capital, the Aztec capital of Teotihuacan. It was home to more than 200,000 people at that time, and spread over an area of more than 20 square kilometers. Thus, in the center of the Zócalo were found more remains of the one believed lost city of Teotihuacan. The Cathedral Metropolitana was built from debris of the Aztec temple that stood one on the site.



The huge cathedral combines over four centuries of architectural styles and building innovations. Thus, this cathedral has preserved a unique blend of Renaissance, Neoclassical and Mexican Baroque styles. The construction of the cathedral had begun in 1573, and reached the size of 109m length, width 59m and the height of 65m. It is the largest cathedral in the Americas, and its highlights include the gilded altar (Altar de los Reyes from the 18th century) surrounded by painted canvases on the sacristy. Upon entering the cathedral, the first thing you will notice is an intricately carved and gilded Altar de Perdon (Altar of Forgiveness).



At the foot of the Señor del Veneno (Lord of Poison), the dark figure of Christ on the right. According to legend, the figure acquired its color when it miraculously absorbed a dose of poison through the feet from the lips of a clergyman to whom an enemy had administered the deadly substance.
