Itinerary
Alaska's National Parks Grand Slam
Days 1-3: Gustavus & Glacier Bay National Park
First stop is Gustavus, gateway to Glacier Bay National Park, where you'll explore a wonderland of calving glaciers, floating icebergs, and quintessential Alaskan wildlife. Relax on a boat cruise, paddle your way along Bartlett Cove, or hike through the lush coastal rainforest, all while keeping your eye out for puffins, sea lions, and humpback whales.
Day 4-6: Kenai Fjords National Park
Sit back, relax, and take in the spectacular scenery as you chug along Turnagain Arm to Seward on the Alaska Railroad. Your time on the Kenai Peninsula includes a full-day boat cruise through Kenai Fjords National Park, where you might see whales, sea lions, otters, porpoises — even a calving glacier. Your time in Seward also includes a fresh salmon dinner on Fox Island and a guided hike to Exit Glacier.
Days 7-10: Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks
After a drive to Anchorage, you’ll fly to Lake Clark Lodge - located in the heart of the 4 million acres that make up the Lake Clark National Park and Preserve - for a couple days in the wild Alaskan bush on the shores of Lake Clark. Fish, kayak, and fly to see brown bears in their natural habitat. Katmai National Park is just 50 miles away, which translates into a short scenic flight from the lodge to see the park’s wildlife and resident brown bears, stunning landscapes, and glacial activity.
Day 11-13: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
From Lake Clark National Park, fly via Anchorage to Kennecott, a remote, former mining town in the middle of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park - the largest national park in the country. From your historic lodge, you’ll have incredible access to this park’s majesty: the largest concentration of glaciers on the continent, four towering mountain ranges, and the historic Kennecott Copper Mines. Tour the old copper mine and take a naturalist-led hike on Root Glacier. Keep your eye out for caribou, moose, bears, wolves, and many other species of wildlife.
Days 14-16: Denali National Park
After a flight from Kennecott, head to the entrance of Denali National Park, for a scenic helicopter ride into Denali’s backcountry (the road is currently closed due to a landslide). After arrival, enjoy delicious meals and a comfortable bed in your cozy backcountry cabin. While here, take a hike, ride a bike, capture lots of photos, and marvel at the 20,320-foot mountain that gives this park its name.
Days 17-18: Gates of the Arctic and Kobuk Valley National Parks
After a helicopter flight back to Denali National Park’s entrance and a drive to the Anchorage airport for your flight, you’ll arrive in Kotzebue, your home base for visiting Alaska’s national parks in the Far North. After a village tour of this remote outpost, you’ll spend a full day touring and flightseeing Kobuk Valley National Park and Gates of the Arctic National Park. Touch down in both parks for an intimate experience and immersion in the remote and wild tundra that is inaccessible by car.
Day 19: Departures Home from Anchorage
Say goodbye to the Arctic and fly back to Anchorage. With precious, indelible memories of The Great Land, catch flights home.
